The World Banks believes these companies make a tangible difference in the lives of people who live in developing countries. Above and beyond highlighting the various programs these firms carry out, IFC emphasized the fact that they operate in difficult areas and under adverse circumstances. Four of the 22 companies are Latin American, and Promigas is the only Colombian company honored. The other three are Argentine and Mexican firms. In the publication, Lars Thunell, IFC Executive Vice President, points out the economic model these companies use and how advancement in their business is creating development and progress in their countries. When talking about Promigas, the International Finance Corporation makes special mention of the Regional Gas Pipelines and the development this initiative has brought to economically vulnerable communities. Also emphasized in the publication is the successful international effort mounted by Promigas, which secured more than five million dollars to subsidize residential natural gas connections for more than 45 thousand low-income families in Colombia. The publication also underscores the social work being done by Fundación Promigas through a variety of educational programs created and carried out for the benefit of more than 200 thousand students each year. “It is with great pleasure that we have included the activities of Promigas in this report,” said Thunell in a letter sent to the company. IFC hopes that more companies will help to promote important changes in scores of communities throughout the world, just as Promigas is doing in different sectors in Colombia.
